Dr. Choi Yuen Wan was born in 1945 and received his medical degree at the University of Manitoba, Canada in 1971. He considered the dilemmas and needs of the young people in Hong Kong during his medical practice in Evangel Hospital, and went on to establish Breakthrough magazine with Miss Josephine So Yan Pui in 1973. Dr. Choi went to Trinity International University for further studies on psychological counseling in 1976. Dr. Choi was the general secretary for Breakthrough for many years before becoming honorary general secretary, a title which he held until June 2015. He is currently the president of the Youth Foundation and the Youth Global Network. Dr. Choi is also active in social community affairs and has been appointed by the HKSAR government as a member of various committees related to youth policy and youth services.


Dr. Choi recalled his family ties with the mainland and the journey of moving to Hong Kong. He shared about his secondary school life and his conversion experience in secondary seven. He recalled his Christian participation during his university life in Canada. His heart to serve China was awakened in these years. Dr. Choi reminisced about his encounter with Josephine So Yan Pui, the founder of Breakthrough magazine, and how So encouraged him to join Breakthrough. He recounted his lifelong service in Breakthrough and reflected on his philosophy of youth work. Dr. Choi shared his experience of serving as the Chairman of the Commission on Youth. He explained how his different public service positions opened different opportunities for young people’s social participation.
