Participating Organization: Christian Sentinels for Hong Kong

Prof. Chan Choi Wan was born in 1960. He graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the London School of Economics and Political Science, and received his doctoral degree from Oxford University. Prof. Chan joined the University of Hong Kong after returning to Hong Kong. In this capacity he taught political theories for many years and is well-known for his academic publications. Prof. Chan was involved in the Christian Sentinels for Hong Kong, the first Christian political commentary organization in Hong Kong in 1980s. He also published many political articles in Ming Pao regarding the 1997 problem of Hong Kong. Prof. Chan began his political participation in 2006 and was a founding member of Civic Party. He was also the former coalition convenor of Path of Democracy, a think tank established in 2015. Since his election in 2015, Prof. Chan has served as a teaching representative of the council of the University of Hong Kong.

The interview started with Prof. Chan’s childhood experience and his conversion to Christianity. He shared how university life led to interests in political philosophy and the political development of Hong Kong. He recalled his experience as an overseas graduate student in the UK and his awareness of national identity. He shared his participation in Christian Sentinels for Hong Kong, the first local Christian political opinion group for Hong Kong’s democratic movement and its return to China. Prof. Chan introduced his participation in the Civic Party and his reflections on political change in Hong Kong after 1997. He reflected on his political philosophy and his reasons for leaving the church.
