The male protagonist is diagnosed with an incurable disease and he calls his lover, Jane, asking her to leave him and find another man who can take care of her, intending to goad Jane into feeling more pity for him. Yet, he receives a letter from Jane the next day, revealing the fact that he is in fact married to another woman.
