Biographies

Mr. Benjun Zhu

Associate Professor, Peking University Library
Secretary-General of China Academic Social Science and Humanities Library
  • Zhu Benjun is an associate professor at Peking University Library and the Secretary-General of China Academic Social Science and Humanities Library, a library consortia of university academic resources co-construction and sharing. His research interests include digital humanities, area studies literature support (such as Belt & Silk resource development and service) and historical research (mainly in China's Warring States Period). He has authored articles on the above fields in the Journal of Academic Libraries, Historical Geography, and published 2 academic books. Three years ago he hosted a DH project about the Chinese historical geography database to facilitate his own historical geography research and produced an academic works named Chinese Historical Map of the Year 333 B.C. which will be published by Peking University Press. In 2017, he hosted and finished a DH report for Peking University suggesting that Peking University take steps to strengthen digital technologies in humanities. Currently, he is doing research in cyber infrastructure for humanities.

Mr. Mahendra Mahey

Manager, British Library Labs
  • Mahendra Mahey is the manager of British Library Labs (BL Labs), an Andrew W. Mellon foundation and British Library funded initiative supporting and inspiring the use of the its data in innovative ways. BL Labs encourages and helps scholars, artists, entrepreneurs, educators and innovators to work with the BL’s digital collections through competitions, awards and other engagement activities. Mahendra is working on developing an international support network with colleagues to bring national, state, university and public libraries together that either had, are planning and already have digital experimental ‘Library Labs’ to share expertise, knowledge and experience in order to build better ‘Library Labs’ for their organisations and users. He has a strong background of working with digital technology as a manager, educator, adviser and community builder in Further and Higher Education for researchers, educators, librarians and businesses both in the UK and internationally.

Biographies

Dr. Janice Pan

Associate Professor, Department of Translation, Interpreting and Intercultural Studies, Hong Kong Baptist University
  • Dr. Janice Jun Pan is Associate Professor in the Department of Translation, Interpreting and Intercultural Studies at Hong Kong Baptist University. She is an experienced conference interpreter and interpreter trainer, and has been researching in interpreting and translation for many years. Dr. Pan’s research interests lie in areas of corpus-based interpreting/translation studies, political discourse and translation/interpreting, learner factors in interpreter training, professionalism in interpreting/translation, etc. Her works are published in journals including Target: International Journal of Translation Studies, Perspectives: Studies in Translatology, The Interpreter and Translator Trainer, etc., and also in scholarly books by Peter Lang, Routledge and Springer.

Dr. Karen Woo

Lecturer and Course Coordinator, Applied Science Division, College of International Education, Hong Kong Baptist University
  • Dr. Karen Woo is a geographical and environmental lecturer and researcher and specially interested in nature conservation, environmental resource management, environmental policy, environmental education and sustainable development. Dr. Woo received her PhD in Geography and Resources Management from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She has an MPhil Degree in Environmental Biology at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and a Master’s Degree in Environmental Management from the University of Hong Kong. She has a diverse work experience in the environmental field including nature and biodiversity conservation, environmental protection and restoration, environmental impact assessment, waste management and environmental policy research. Currently, she joins the College of International Education of the Hong Kong Baptist University as the Course Coordinator and Lecturer and teaches geographical and environmental-related subjects. In addition, she has collaborated with some conservation or community groups to conduct social surveys to gauge public views and attitudes on various local environmental issues and challenges facing Hong Kong. The results of the surveys will be released to the public to make a meaningful contribution to positive social change towards sustainable development.

Dr. Kwok, Wai Luen

Associate Professor, Department of Religion and Philosophy, Hong Kong Baptist University
  • Dr Kwok Wai Luen is Associate Professor of the Department of Religion and Philosophy, and Associate Director of Centre for Sino-Christian Studies at Hong Kong Baptist University. He also serves as Vice President of the Society for the Study of the History of Christianity in China and is a member of the Theology Committee of Christian and Missionary Alliance Church Union of Hong Kong. He received his MSocSc in Counselling from the City University of Hong Kong, MDiv and ThM in Christianity and Chinese Culture from Alliance Bible Seminary, Hong Kong, and PhD in Theology from King’s College London. He has authored and edited 4 books and published more than 20 journal articles on Chinese Christianity and Systematic Theology. His most recent book publication is Self-defence or Social Concern? The Social and Political Participation of Hong Kong Church (2014). He has been awarded two General Research Fund projects of Research Grant Council of HKSAR Government since he joined HKBU in 2012. Both projects are in the history of Christianity in China.

Dr. Sarah Ng

Research Assistant Professor, Academy of Visual Arts, Hong Kong Baptist University
  • Dr. Sarah Ng is an art historian specializing in Chinese painting, calligraphy and rubbings. She is also a curator and has organised numerous exhibitions of both ancient and contemporary Chinese art. The relationship and reinterpretation of the Chinese tradition in contemporary art practice is a primary area of scholarly interest. She lectures on this subject and other areas of expertise internationally. Her recent interest is on local bookplate history. Dr. Ng received her DPhil in Art History from the University of Oxford. She was a Chevening scholar and has a Master’s Degree in art conservation from University College London and an MPhil in Art History at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Dr. Ng was an Associate Curator at the Hong Kong University Museum & Art Gallery and an honorary assistant professor at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) before joining AVA.

Prof. Leung, Mee Ping

Professor, Academy of Visual Arts, Hong Kong Baptist University
  • Prof. Leung Mee-ping received her BFA from L’Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts a Paris, France and her MFA from California Institute of the Arts, LA, U.S.A. and Ph.D at Chinese University of Hong Kong (Religious & Cultural Studies Department). Her creative practicing includes installation, mixed media, public art and community art, etc. Through research-based practicing proceed experimental interaction and integration, her works can integrate elements and platforms of theatre, design, commercial space and social space, in order to extend performance or action; those can be read as issue-based creativity. Her works concern the ethic, community and memories of the human living situation which closely intertwined with her theory research area of visual culture and globalization.
