Prof. Sung Yun Wing was born in 1948 and graduated from the University of Hong Kong before receiving his doctoral degree from the University of Minnesota, USA. Upon his return to Hong Kong he joined the University of Hong Kong. Prof. Sung was the former editor of Undergrad, the student periodical of the University of Hong Kong. Later, Prof. Sung established Christian Sentinels for Hong Kong, the first Christian political commentary organization in Hong Kong in 1985. He also published many articles in Ming Pao related to the discussion of Hong Kong’s future from a scholarly perspective. In 2014, Prof. Sung and twelve other socio-economic scholars promoted a progressive agenda, entitled the “thirteen scholar scheme” for the discussion of Hong Kong political reforms.


Prof. Sung recalled how his primary and secondary school education shaped his character and personal values. He also shared his first social participation experience – the Chinese Language Movement – when he was a university student. He introduced how he started to be involved in Christian social participation activities when he met with Josephine So Yan Pui and Philemon Choi Yuen Wan. He shared how he initiated the first local Christian political opinion group, Christian Sentinels for Hong Kong, in the transitional period of Hong Kong’s handover. Prof. Sung also recalled his political participation in different groups from the 1990s until now.
